See the highlights of the Golden Circle and snorkel between two tectonic plates on this small-group day tour from Reykjavik.
The tour begins with pickup in Reykjavik. Your first stop is Silfra Fissure in Thingvellir National Park, where you snorkel in crystal-clear glacial meltwater that spends about 30 years filtering through lava before it reaches the fissure.
Silfra lies in the rift between the North American and Eurasian plates, and its water stays at roughly the same temperature all year, 35 to 39 degrees Fahrenheit (2 to 4 degrees Celsius).
The snorkeling tour takes you through the four main sections of Silfra: Silfra Deep Crack, Silfra Hall, Silfra Cathedral, and Silfra Lagoon. Afterward, you warm up with hot chocolate and cookies.
Next, you explore Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its name means "fields of assembly," and Iceland's first parliament, the Althingi, met here in 930 AD.
Then you continue to the Geysir Geothermal Area. The Great Geysir is now mostly dormant, but Strokkur Geyser erupts every 4 to 16 minutes.
At Gullfoss Waterfall, water from Langjokull Glacier drops 105 feet (32 meters) in two tiers into the rugged canyon below.
The final stop is Kerid Crater, a volcanic crater with steep red slopes and a blue-green lake at its bottom.
At the end of the day, your guide takes you back to Reykjavik.
