Description
Raft down the West Glacial River (Vestari Jokulsa) in North Iceland on this family-friendly half-day tour with gentle rapids.
The tour starts at the rafting base at Hafgrimsstadir Farm, about 68 miles (110 kilometers) from Akureyri. Here, you meet your guides and the rest of the group, and a vehicle takes you to the river.
The river is fed by Hofsjokull Glacier and runs through a canyon with tall volcanic walls, giving a gentler whitewater experience that suits beginners and families.
Before you set off, your guide gives you a short introduction to rafting and a safety briefing. You get all the safety gear you need. Each raft has a trained, certified river guide.
Then you board the raft and head down the river, with splashing waves, gentle rapids, and views of the canyon.
You don't need to swim while rafting, but you should be comfortable floating in water. Along the way, you can join a friendly water fight with the other rafts or jump into the glacial river, and your drysuit keeps you warm.
You also stop to make hot cocoa with water from a natural hot spring.
At the end of the tour, you change back into your own clothes at the base.
